January 19, 2010 resized cropped.jpg\" alt=\"Larch seedlings Jan 19 2010\" width=\"161\" height=\"97\" \/><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\" style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\">Larch seedlings Jan 19th<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>Seeds were planted just before Christmas and it was the larch seedlings which popped to the surface first. \u00a0 It has been and still is very noticeable the difference in growth between the two species. \u00a0<\/p>\n<dl class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 170px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/alrf.unbc.ca\/wp-content\/images\/Larch seedlings February 15 2010 004 resized.jpg\" alt=\"Larch seedlings Feb 15 2010\" width=\"160\" height=\"120\" \/><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\" style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: center\">Larch seedlings Feb 15th<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>Talking with Steve Storch (Greenhouse Curator) last week, about the cedar seedlings in particular, he commented that the cedar seedlings appeared to germinate quicker in the conventional gravel grit compared to seeds covered with &#8220;styrogrit&#8221; (made from recycled styroblocks). \u00a0 Steve indicated that the seeds covered with styrogrit seemed \u00a0 to be \u00a0about 2 weeks slower \u00a0than those covered with the gravel grit. He further explained that this would intuitively make sense since the styrogrit is white and reflects heat, while the gravel grit is grey and darkens up even more when wet. this likely leads to a higher temperature near the seed which is good for seed germination in general.
